Statue base of white marble for Regilla, Herodes Atticus’ wife, dedicated before the temple of Tyche by the Corinthian boule. The text records an epigram in her honour, assimilating her with Tyche. Although the dedication of the statue could be dated according to the text before Regilla’s death (between 143 and 160 CE), the letter forms indicate a much later date, at least a century later. Therefore, it has been proposed that the base could have been a replacement of an earlier one (thus: Kent, Corinth VIII. 3, 128; Edwards 1990, 537, n. 44). Sophrosyne was depicted in the stone by the artisan ([πᾶσαν σ]ωφροσύνην ἐς λίθον ἀραμένην) and thus she was connected once again with Regilla (see also Corinth VIII.1, 86 and the relevant entry). Herodes Atticus was also praised, and therefore Regilla whom she took as her husband. |
