Three fragments of an oblong marble statue base with a dedication for Claudia Teisamenis. The statue was part of a statue group of her family, including her father, Atticus, her husband Ti. Claudius Aristokrates (II) and their son Claudius Seimedes. The monument was set up in accordance with the will of Claudia Teisamenis, i.e. after her own and her husband’s death by her brother, the renowned Ti. Claudius Herodes Atticus. See also Cartledge – Spawforth 2002, 175. According to Settipani 2000, 488, Claudia Teisamenis’s grandfather Ti. Claudius Hipparchus must have been married to a Spartan prominent woman named Teisamenis, to whom the person owed her cognomen. Perhaps her father, Tiberius Claudius Atticus made the acquaintance of Claudia Teisamenis’s future husband, Ti. Claudius Aristokrates (II) during his ephebate at Sparta, cf. Tobin 1997, 18-19, 323-324. Her husband was probably eponymous patronomos (RP II, LAC 262). |
