Rectangular plaque-like marble slab with a dedication of a macellum to the deified emperors and an unknown polis by three Roman citizens at their own expense, including a woman, Iulia Kedne. According to Stroud the stone was transported either from the neighbouring polis of Epidauros Limera or from Boiai, although the possibility of a more distant provenance cannot be excluded. A discussion on the Spartan macellum is found in RP II, LAC 382. Other macella in the Peloponnese were financed by private benefactors, such as in Corinth, Mantineia, Sparta and Tegea, see Evangelidis 2019. Often, members of the same family dedicated jointly a macellum and this may also be the case here, since the three persons attested in the epigraphic text bear the same gentilicium, Iulius. |
