Description - Comments:
Poor state of preservation. The entire left part of the face is missing (along with the neck), while the rest is heavily eroded (only the inner edges of the eyes are visible). The hair is in a better state of preservation. It is divided at the top of the forehead into two equal parts of wavy locks directed towards the back of the head, partially covering the ears. In front of the “waves” around the face there are small circular locks of hair (preserved better on the right side of the face close to the ear), while two small S-shaped locks are left free on the temples. The texture of the individual hairs on the surface of the marble is rendered meticulously with the point. The hairdo closely draws upon the iconography of members of the Julio-Claudian family of the second quarter of the 1st c. CE, such as Agrippina the Younger, Livilla, Drusilla and Valeria Messalina (for parallels see Bonanno-Aravantinos 2000, 771, notes 37-38; for the iconography of these female members of the imperial house see P. Konstantinidis, Γυναικείοι δυναστικοί εικονιστικοί ανδριάντες αυτοκρατορικής περιόδου από την Ελλάδα (τέλη 1ου αι. π.Χ. – 5ος αι. μ.Χ.), Athens 2024, 316, 332-333, 350, 357). She wears a wreath of small elongated leaves (myrtle or olive according to M. Bonanno-Aravantinos), which probably reveals her priestly status.
