Description - Comments:
The statue is preserved essentially intact, with the exception of the inset head. Chipping is evident sporadically on the surface of the marble, especially along the ridges of the folds of the garments, as well as on the fingers and toes. The figure follows closely the statuary type of the so-called “Small Herculaneum Woman”. She is depicted standing, frontal, wearing a long, sleaved chiton, a long himation and Hellenistic-style sandals (i.e. that follow the contour of the toes) with thin soles. The weight of the figure falls on the left leg, while the right, slightly bent, is placed towards the back. The himation is wrapped tightly around almost the entire body, including the arms. The right arm is placed diagonally across the chest, its wrist resting on the left shoulder, where it lifts the edge of the himation, revealing the left hand, placed lower and tightly wrapped around the garment (only the fingertips project underneath). Across the lower edge of the himation runs a parallel press fold (for press folds, indicative of high quality and expensive garments see H. Granger-Taylor, “The Emperor’s Clothes: The Fold Lines”, BClevMus 74.3 [1987], 114–123).
