Description - Comments:
The head is well preserved, along with part of the neck. The nose, part of the lower left section of the neck, and the lobe of the right ear are broken. Abrasions are evident on the mouth, right eye, cheeks, and headdress. The head depicts a woman with a plump oval face, smooth cheeks, low forehead, and thin mouth, which turns slightly to the right. The eyebrows are indicated by diagonal incisions on the surface of the marble. The eyes are almond-shaped with wide lids (the iris, pupil and tear-duct are marked). The hair is divided at the top of the forehead into two equal parts and is directed in strong deep waves to the sides and back, covering the ears along the way, except for the earlobes. At the back of the head a broad bun is formed, consisting of five rows of thick braids (the texture of the individual locks of hair is indicated by incised triangles and lines on their surface). A small spiral lock of hair is left free on either side of the neck. Based on the analysis of the coiffure by Ι. Chioti (2012, 150, 151-152), it combines elements from the fourth and fifth portrait types of Faustina the Younger, and therefore must be dated to the period ca. 151-160 CE (for these two portrait types see K. Fittschen, Die Bildnistypen der Faustina minor und die Fecunditas Augustae, Göttingen 1982, 49-53, 151-159/160 CE).
