Description - Comments:
Only the rear of the head is preserved, with a small part from the upper and right sides. The entire surface of the marble is heavily eroded, with the exception of part of the coiffure on the right. A vertical groove runs at the center of the head. In the lower part of the fragment, the beginning of a flat rectangular bun, formed by a winding braid, is preserved. The coiffure covers the entire upper part of the skull like a cap (probably a wig), with the locks of hair forming deep stiff elongated waves (they are preserved only on the right part of the fragment; their texture is indicated by parallel incisions worked with the point). The coiffure of this type ending at the back in an almost rectangular flat bun formed by a winding braid is typical of the Severan period. It appears in the official iconography of several members of the Severian dynasty, such as Julia Domna, Plautilla, Julia Mamaea, Julia Maesa and Julia Soaemia (see J. Meischer, Das Frauenporträt der Severerzeit, Berlin 1967, pl. 1, nos. 4b, 10-11; see also the examples in Dontas 2004, 85, e.g. the portrait head of probably Julia Mamaea, Athens National Archaeological Museum, inv. no. 571: Th.
