Description - Comments:

The body of the statue is preserved, from the base of the neck to approximately the knees. The inset head is missing (with the exception of the lower part of the neck, still within the insertion cavity), the inset left hand and the right hand, projecting from the himation sling at chest height. Small breaks and chipping are evident sporadically on the surface of the marble, especially along the ridges of the folds of the garments. The drapery is worked with the drill. It depicts a standing, frontal female figure wearing a chiton and a wide himation that wraps tightly around the body. The weight of the body is carried on the left leg. The way the himation is worn follows for the most part the elaborate manner of the so-called “Formia” statuary type. More specifically, the himation is wrapped tightly under the chest with its left edge falling over the bent at the elbow and extended left forearm. It also wraps around the figure’s back with the right hand slightly moving its right part away from the chest area (differing slightly from the “Formia” type). The rendering of the drapery is close to works of the Antonine period (cf. e.g. the portrait-statues from the Olympia Nymphaeum, {Γ99} and {Γ111}, 149-153 CE), where the statue should also be dated.
